Thrush is a common bacterial infection of the hoof's frog, thriving in wet, dirty conditions. It's largely preventable with consistent hoof hygiene and a clean, dry environment.
What Causes Thrush
Standing in wet, muddy, or manure-soiled bedding for long periods creates the ideal environment for the bacteria that cause thrush to thrive in the grooves of the frog.
Prevention Steps
Pick out hooves daily, keep stalls and paddocks as clean and dry as possible, and schedule regular farrier visits to maintain healthy hoof shape and function.
Thrush produces a distinctive foul odor and dark discharge, which is often how owners first notice it before any lameness appears.
If Thrush Develops
Clean the affected hoof thoroughly, apply a veterinarian-approved topical thrush treatment, and keep the horse in a clean, dry area until it clears. Severe or persistent cases should be seen by a vet or farrier.
