Origin & History
Created in Iowa in 1954 from a single foal — a cross between an Appaloosa mare and a Shetland pony stallion — the Pony of the Americas (POA) was purpose-built as a spotted, scaled-down mount specifically for young riders.
Appearance
POAs combine a stock-horse build with Appaloosa spotted coat patterns, standing between 11.2 and 14 hands — proportioned like a full-size horse, just smaller.
Temperament
Gentle and eager to please, POAs were bred specifically with young riders in mind, and remain a fixture of youth show circuits and 4-H programs across the country.
