Origin & History
One of the oldest warmblood breeds in the world, the Holsteiner traces back over 700 years to the marshlands of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany, where it was bred first as a war and carriage horse. Careful crossing with Thoroughbred bloodlines in the 20th century refined it into one of the world's premier show jumping breeds.
Appearance
Holsteiners are tall, powerfully built warmbloods, usually bay, black, brown, or gray, with a strong topline, sloping shoulder, and athletic hindquarters built for jumping power.
Temperament
Bold, intelligent, and trainable, Holsteiners are prized by competitive riders for their combination of scope, courage, and rideability.
Holsteiners have won more Olympic show jumping medals than almost any other warmblood breed.
Common Uses
Show jumping, eventing, and dressage at the upper levels of competition.
